Pi Pie
Pi Day is today (3.14)! Larry Shaw started Pi Day in 1988 when he was a physicist at the San Francisco Exploratorium. Today schools across the country will host Pi Day activities and then students might eat slices of pie. Pi is the relationship of a circle’s circumference divided by its diameter. An irrational number, pi has been calculated to 62.8 trillion decimal places. Several wonderful websites are devoted to Pi Day, but probably the best one is the Exploratorium site at: Pi Day.
David Stein in 1988 in New York City created a bubble fifty feet long. A bubble has three layers: soap, water, and soap. Children could make their own bubble solution by combining 1/3 part dishwashing liquid with 2/3 part water. If possible, they should let the bubble solution rest for a while before they use it. They could conduct experiments to see who could make the biggest bubble (outside of course).
World AIDS Day is recognized around the world. The World Health Organization proposed the first World AIDS Day in 1988. Since 1995 a Presidential proclamation has been issued on this day. Other countries followed.
